Thonburi railway station in bangkok

Thonburi railway station in bangkok

Thonburi Railway Station (also known to locals as Bangkok Noi) is one of Bangkok’s terminal stations and the starting point for the famous Death Railway line [ Bangkok Thonburi to Namtok ] to Kanchanaburi, home of the Bridge over the River Kwai, and on to the end of the line at Nam Tok near the Sai Yok waterfalls. The station is much quieter than Krung Thep Aphiwat and has a relaxed local atmosphere. If you’re taking Train 257 to Kanchanaburi, arriving around 30–45 minutes early gives you time to buy tickets and choose a window seat on the left-hand side for better views along the historic Death Railway.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Thonburi Railway Station’s opening hours?

The station is generally open from around 04:00 to 21:30 every day, roughly from the first departure to the last arrival. The ticket counter opens ahead of each departure.

Can I book Thonburi train tickets online?

No. Every train from Thonburi is an unreserved 3rd-class Commuter or Ordinary service, so tickets can’t be reserved online or in advance. Just buy your ticket in cash at the station counter on the day, and try to arrive about 30 minutes before departure.

How do I get from Thonburi to Kanchanaburi and the River Kwai?

Thonburi is the starting point for the historic Death Railway. Take Ordinary train 257 (departs 07:45) or 259 (departs 13:55). Both call at Kanchanaburi, where you will find the Bridge over the River Kwai, before continuing to the end of the line at Nam Tok.

Is this the old historic Thonburi station?

Not quite. The original 1903 station (built as Bangkok Noi station) stood closer to the Chao Phraya River. In 2003 services were moved about 800 metres to the current station beside Siriraj Hospital. The old building has been restored and is now the Siriraj Bimuksthan Museum, well worth a visit.

Is there food at or near the station?

There are small drink and snack stalls at the station. For a proper meal, walk toward Siriraj Hospital and the nearby Wang Lang market, which has plenty of food stalls and shops.

How do I get to the station?

You can arrive by taxi, motorcycle taxi, or app-based ride. A scenic option is the Chao Phraya Express Boat — get off at Thonburi Railway Station (Railway) Pier or Wang Lang Pier and walk a few minutes to the station.

Is Thonburi the main train station in Bangkok?

No. Bangkok’s main long-distance terminal is Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal. Thonburi is a smaller terminus serving local Commuter and Ordinary trains, most famously the line to Kanchanaburi and Nam Tok.

What phone number can I call for train information?

Call the State Railway of Thailand hotline on 1690, available 24 hours, for schedules and general train enquiries.
