Wang Phong train station

wangphong railway station

Wang Phong is the kind of country station most travellers roll straight past on the way south from Hua Hin — which is exactly why it’s worth knowing about. I stopped here on a slow ordinary train and the platform came alive the moment we pulled in: vendors pushing trays of ho mok, the little banana-leaf cups of steamed fish curry the station is quietly famous for, straight up to the carriage windows. It’s a small, sleepy stop in Pran Buri district, but it’s a handy back door to the calmer end of the coast: the quieter Pran Buri beaches, the mangrove boardwalks of Pranburi Forest Park, and Khao Kalok headland are all a short ride away, with none of the Hua Hin crowds. Below is everything you need to catch a train through Wang Phong (also spelled Wang Pong).

Station Information

  • Address: Wang Phong Railway Station, Wang Phong Subdistrict, Pran Buri District, Prachuap Khiri Khan 77120 — on Ban Wat Wang Phong–Pran Buri Hospital Road, about 244 km south of Bangkok.
  • Phone: SRT hotline 1690 (this is a small Class 2 station without a dedicated public counter line).
  • Opening hours: Trains call at Wang Phong around the clock, from just after midnight through to late evening. It’s a small station, so staff and the ticket window are on hand around train times rather than continuously.
  • ID required: Yes — bring your passport (or Thai ID card) to buy tickets.
  • Facilities: Basic. Two platforms, a small ticket office and a shelter — but the platform food is the draw, especially ho mok and other snacks sold by vendors when trains stop. For shops, ATMs, cafes and restaurants, head into Pran Buri town nearby.
  • Getting around: Motorcycle taxis and songthaews (shared pickups) serve the area; Pran Buri town centre, the beaches and Pranburi Forest Park are a short drive away. Hua Hin is roughly 30–40 minutes north. If you’re heading to Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, Dolphin Bay or Kui Buri National Park, get off here and continue to your accommodation by local taxi, Grab or Bolt — and you can ask the station staff to arrange a local taxi for you.
  • Nearest highlights: Pran Buri beach and its low-key resorts, Pranburi Forest Park (mangrove walkways), and Khao Kalok headland — a quieter alternative to Hua Hin, and a gateway towards Sam Roi Yot National Park.

Train types: Special Express and Express are the fastest, with air-conditioned seats and sleeper berths; Rapid trains are cheaper with a mix of fan and air-con carriages; Ordinary (local) trains are 3rd-class only, unreserved and stop everywhere — slow but very cheap. The four Ordinary trains here (251, 252, 254, 255) can’t be booked online, so just buy your ticket at the station. All long-distance trains to and from Bangkok use Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bang Sue Grand Station); the Ordinary trains use the old Thonburi station.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Wang Phong Railway Station?

It’s in Wang Phong Subdistrict, Pran Buri District, Prachuap Khiri Khan, about 244 km south of Bangkok and roughly 30–40 minutes south of Hua Hin. It sits on the main Southern Line between Khao Tao (to the north) and Pran Buri (to the south).

Why is Wang Phong famous for ho mok?

Ho mok — steamed fish curry in banana-leaf cups — is the station’s signature snack. When trains pull in, vendors walk the platform and carriage windows selling it fresh, and it’s become the thing people associate with a stop at Wang Phong.

What can I do near the station?

Wang Phong is a handy, low-key gateway to Pran Buri’s quieter beaches, the mangrove boardwalks of Pranburi Forest Park, and the Khao Kalok headland. It’s also a jumping-off point toward Sam Roi Yot National Park — all far calmer than nearby Hua Hin.

Which national parks can I reach from Wang Phong?

Wang Phong is the handiest railway stop for southern Prachuap Khiri Khan. If you’re heading to Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, Dolphin Bay or Kui Buri National Park (famous for its wild elephants), get off the train here and continue to your hotel by local taxi, Grab or Bolt. Cars aren’t always waiting, so it’s worth arranging your ride ahead of time — and you can ask the station staff to call a local taxi for you.

Do I need my passport to buy a ticket?

Yes. Thai railways require photo ID for ticket purchases, so bring your passport (or Thai national ID card if you have one).

Can I book Wang Phong trains online?

The Express, Rapid and Special Express services can be booked online in advance, which is wise for sleeper berths and busy holiday periods. The four Ordinary (local) trains — 251, 252, 254 and 255 — are unreserved 3rd-class services that you simply pay for at the station counter.

What facilities does the station have?

It’s a small Class 2 station with two platforms, a ticket office and a shelter, plus the well-known platform food vendors. For ATMs, convenience stores and a wider choice of restaurants, head into Pran Buri town, a short ride away.

How old is Wang Phong station?

It opened in January 1914 when the Southern Line was extended south from Hua Hin, and it briefly served as the line’s southern terminus until the track reached Prachuap Khiri Khan in June 1914. In the steam era it was a water and fuelling point near the Pranburi River and even had its own locomotive depot and turntable, though those are long gone.

Train times change without much notice. Always double-check with the SRT hotline 1690, or track your train live on the SRT tracker for Wang Phong, before you travel.
